The leading causes for road accidents in Luxembourg remain alcohol and speeding. According to minister Bausch, the lockdown did not significantly decrease the overall statistics, which is due to the fact that the early months of the year usually count the fewest accidents. The summer months in comparison normally bring a rise in cases. New initiatives will thus be launched to combat the number of fatalities in the future.
The association of road victims (AVR) underlines that even during lockdown, several licenses were revoked due to cases of driving under the influence of alcohol. The organisation is concerned with the well-being of road victims and their families.
In 2019, twenty-two people died after accidents on the Grand Duchy's roads. 2018 counted thirty-six such cases. The installation of traffic cameras aims at reducing the number in the future.
In cooperation with minister Bausch, AVR has now launched a new awareness campaign on the drastic consequences of alcohol abuse.
