Prime Minister Xavier Bettel explained during the meeting that the government was in frequent contact with the High Commission of National Protection (HPCN) to take stock of the tornado's damages. The provisional assessment specified that two individuals had been severely injured when the tornado ripped through Petange and Käerjeng. Fortunately, none of them remains in critical condition.
Insurance companies received 1,600 insurance claims for damages. The sector believes material damage to hover around €100 million. The government, in return, has only received a small number of applications for state aid. This should not come as a surprise: applicants first need to get a certificate from their insurance company before being able to file a claim for state aid. The exact number can only be calculated in November.
Xavier Bettel also thanked all the groups of people that gave a helping hand after the tornado, including the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) and their colleagues from France and Germany, the army, the local municipalities, the police, and, last but not least, all the volunteers that came from all over the country to help or donate.
