In recent weeks, several pet cats abroad have died after contracting bird flu. In Luxembourg, however, no such cases have been recorded. The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA) is closely monitoring the situation in cooperation with the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), particularly with regard to wild mammals. So far, no infections have been detected, explains ALVA deputy director Dr Caroline Merten, adding that cats in Luxembourg are currently not affected by bird flu.

The first bird flu case in Luxembourg this year was confirmed in October in a common crane. Since then, 22 cases have been recorded, with common cranes being most affected accounting for 17 of all cases. The most recent positive case was detected earlier this week, which means that the existing preventive measures remain in place. Restrictions can only be eased after two weeks without any new cases and lifted entirely after four weeks without further detections.

For now, cat owners in Luxembourg do not need to take any special precautions. Should cases among pets occur in the future, ALVA has already issued clear guidelines that urge owners to remain vigilant, and if a cat or dog show flu-like symptoms, owners are advised to consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.
