In his reply to a parliamentary question by MP François Benoy, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel explained, in his remit as Minister for Religious Affairs, that the ordination of Jean-Claude Hollerich will not have financial consequences for the state.
Bettel clarified that Cardinal Hollerich and auxiliary bishop of Luxembourg Léo Wagener still receive the salaries stipulated under the previous system because they were ordained before the official separation of the state and the church in 2016.
The ordination of the two men will neither change their salaries nor trigger additional costs for the state, Bettel explained. The Prime Minister added that he was not informed about the nomination ahead of the announcement, as different religions are not legally obliged to inform the state of these matters.
