The municipal authorities have made available a former school in the Rollingergrund neighbourhood for the initial reception of Ukrainian refugees, Wilmes stated.
In addition, a 28-room hotel has been rented in Bonnevoie for a period of six years. According to the local politician, the search for additional premises is continuing. A coordination group had also been set up, Wilmes added.
The municipality is working closely with local Ukrainian associations, including LUkraine, to assist arriving refugees. Wilmes also pointed out that Luxembourg City already has a quite sizeable Ukrainian community of about 600 people.
Asked about the evolution of energy prices, Serge Wilmes assured that the City of Luxembourg would support low-income households. The municipal cost-of-living benefit will be increased, and an energy bonus will be introduced.
Wilmes also stated that housing remained a priority for municipal officials. The municipal executive is currently building 700 homes, the politician from the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) pointed out.
He mentioned the major projects such as Porte de Hollerich or the former Villeroy&Boch site, while admitting that the procedures were taking far too long. This was due to the fact that ministries often take years to issue the required authorisations.
Regarding the security issues in the Gare neighbourhood, Wilmes stated that, for the time being, the municipality does not plan to hire a private security company again. However, Wilmes added that if it were necessary and if a sufficient police presence could not be ensured, the municipal authorities might come back to this idea.
