According to the political spokesperson of Caritas Luxembourg, Carole Reckinger, inequality and poverty are on the rise in Luxembourg. In these difficult times of multiple crises, municipalities can use their position to help and support people, she further argued.
Reckinger said that social offices should increase transparency so that people know exactly what kind of help they can expect under which conditions. Also, vulnerable people’s access to housing has to be simplified, explained the Caritas spokesperson, who noted that people should be included in the planning process of their local residential districts.
When it comes to climate change, municipalities should be role models, argued Reckinger. She elaborated that public buildings should be made more energy efficient and cafeterias in schools and daycares should serve local and seasonal ingredients.
The Caritas spokesperson finds it difficult to assess how much effort individual municipalities are putting in due to the lack of transparency.
The list of demands marks a change of policy for the charity, which has previously only campaigned ahead of general elections.
