Bascharage BypassMunicipal Council rejects revised plan

RTL Today
The municipal council unanimously rejected a new version of the Bascharage bypass, which Ministers François Bausch and Joëlle Welfring recently proposed.

The revised plan proposed the construction of a tunnel beneath the Bobësch forest, which environmental activists seek to preserve.

Mayor of Bascharage and MP for the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) Michel Wolter issued a press release on Wednesday morning stating that the municipality had sought legal counsel following the presentation of the new project.

The municipality was reportedly told that all studies would have to be redone, which would likely result in a further delay of several years. In addition, there are doubts about the project’s technical feasibility, and a new law would be required because a tunnel would be more expensive than the original project.

The municipal leaders of Bascharage call on the ministers to close the current procedure. The local council has been informed that the Minister for Mobility will hand over all documents relating to the environmental studies to Minister for the Environment Joëlle Welfring before the end of the week.

Once Welfring gives the green light, the procedure could be closed, and construction could start, according to the municipal council of Bascharage.
