The Luxembourgish government wants to push for a revision of the European Commission’s proposals in the fight against sexual abuse of minors on the internet.
The right to privacy must be respected, Minister of Justice Sam Tanson stressed in the Chamber of Deputies. A “systematic mass surveillance” would in no way be “proportional,” according to Tanson. The Commission’s project has been widely critcised because it stipulates that internet providers such as Google or Facebook would be legally obligated to automatically scan all messages – including private chats – for suspicious content.
Critics fear that the project would lead to mass surveillance. Luxembourg’s MPs have also expressed reservations over the initiative.
