To address the growing number of animals being abandoned or surrendered, Luxembourg’s Minister of Agriculture, Martine Hansen, announced that the government intends to expand shelter capacities in the future, looking towards the north of the Grand Duchy.
“We had already agreed in the coalition agreement to look at ways of supporting additional structures where it makes sense. We would be extremely pleased if we could also establish a facility in the North, since the region, which makes up a large part of our country, currently has no shelter,” Hansen said.
The dire need for more capacity is confirmed by Loïc Feltgen of the Gasperich animal shelter, who believes that it is essential to create more space to take in additional animals. “We are doing our best, but eventually even the broadest shoulders get overloaded.”
However, as explained by Minister Hansen, a new shelter cannot be built, as there aren’t any non-profit associations available to operate it as of now.
“In the North, we unfortunately no longer have an active animal welfare organisation. We need such a partner to take on responsibility, and then we can support them with construction. We’ve already held discussions with all the municipalities and gathered their representatives. I hope we’ll soon find a solution for the north as well,” Hansen shared.
In the meantime, the ministry is urging future pet owners to think carefully before adopting an animal. Prospective owners should make sure that a dog or cat truly fits into their lifestyle, in order to prevent more animals from ending up in shelters.
