Annual congressMouvement Ecologique pleads for unity in the face of energy transition

RTL Today
Saturday saw the annual congress of non-profit 'Mouvement Ecologique', an organisation concerned with the environment and sustainable development here in Luxembourg.

Our way of life is not sustainable, underlined ‘Mouveco’ president Blanche Weber during the national congress of the non-profit organisation. Despite a growing awareness for biodiversity and natural disasters, the people maintain their uninhibited behaviour.

The last couple of years saw many missed opportunities, Weber further noted: “We can no longer focus on false solutions and run in circles. We now have to succeed with the energy transition and the change in agricultural policies and the economic system.”

Mouveco officials are convinced that the situation cannot be resolved without discussing the compulsion for growth. The organisation thus demands that the government conduct an in-depth analysis to determine how the social system can be financed independently from growth. Further demands include a sustainable tax reform and politicians who take responsibility.

Weber commented: “I can no longer listen to talks of regional and organic agriculture when not even the Minister of Education can commit to having Restopolis, which cater to our schools, primarily use regional and organic produce.”

The transition can only succeed if all politicians are on the same page and stop to put all responsibilities on the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development. Weber also stressed that people of low income need to be supported and thus welcomed the €8,000 bonus for the purchase of an electric car.

Weber concluded by saying that the country needs unity from its political leaders so that we can create a better future.
