Trams, trains, buses, and even funiculars are free throughout the country. Luxembourg was the first country in the world to make public transport free. The measure, which was introduced three years ago, was met with some success among residents and has made Luxembourg more attractive to cross-border workers.

To achieve this “revolution,” the Grand Duchy has invested massively in projects to improve transport infrastructure.

In the case of the railway network, €3.2 billion have been earmarked to increase its capacity until 2027, following a prior investment of €2.8 billion between 2008 and 2019.

In addition, the government plans to double the number of spaces in park-and-ride facilities, adapt bus routes, provide real-time information to travellers, double the number of recharging points for electric vehicles, improve cycle paths, expand the tram network, and add a third lane on motorways dedicated to carpooling.

However, this plan is not unanimously supported in a country where the car remains the most widely used means of transport.

Some 47% of business trips are made by car in Luxembourg. The bus is used for only 32% of trips to work, ahead of the train (19%). In comparison, about 70% of workers in Paris use public transport.
