Minister of Foreign Affairs and Immigration Jean Asselborn shared this information while presenting a report on asylum and immigration in 2022 during a press conference on Tuesday.
After two years marked by the pandemic, the number of applications for international protection in Luxembourg increased by nearly 82% in 2022. In 2020 and 2021, the strict measures taken at global level to combat the spread of Covid-19 led to a sharp drop in the number of people arriving in Luxembourg seeking international protection.
In 2022, 2,269 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg. In addition, 5,397 applications for temporary protection were submitted by refugees from Ukraine.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs also announced that it will henceforth be possible for Ukrainian nationals who benefit from temporary protection, have found a job, and are not residing in a structure managed by the National Reception Office (ONA) to apply for a residence permit.
