On average, almost 100 European citizens are deported from Luxembourg every year. Between 2021 and the end of 2024, 323 people received a deportation letter. The reasons for these deportations vary. They are justified on the grounds that the citizen represents a threat to public security, or is an unreasonable burden on the state.
Anyone notified of such a decision must leave the Grand Duchy within 30 days, explained Minister of Home Affairs Léon Gloden; this was in response to a parliamentary question from MPs Corinne Cahen and Mandy Minella of the Democratic Party (DP).
Forced deportation is not generally applied to EU citizens. Most people were deported to Portugal (89), followed by France (70), Romania (57), and Germany (25).
As far as non-EU citizens are concerned, around 3,800 men and women have been deported in the last four years, including applicants for international protection whose applications have been rejected.
