Mobile phones in schoolsMinistry of Education currently sees no reason for general ban

RTL Today
Following the recent partial restriction on mobile phone and tablet use at Lycée Ermesinde in Mersch, our colleagues from RTL.lu reached out to the Ministry of Education for comments regarding the matter.

The Ministry of Education currently sees no reason for a general ban on mobile phones because the use of mobile phones during lessons is prohibited in all schools by Grand Ducal regulation.

Autonomy of secondary schools

Internally, secondary schools may adapt their policies concerning mobile phone usage to the realities of everyday life, a practice already observed in most schools.

In line with its autonomy, Lycée Ermesinde in Mersch recently made the decision to restrict the use of mobile phones and laptops within its premises.

The Ministry acknowledges this development and plans to review the school’s experience with the new regulations in collaboration with the school board at some point in the future.

Decision of Lycée Ermesinde

The decision made by Lycée Ermesinde specifically applies to students in the lower cycle, encompassing the 7th to 4th years.

According to the Ministry of Education, this decision emerged from a comprehensive two-year reflection process aimed at better aligning the school’s pedagogical concept with specific requirements.

The focus was primarily on curtailing excessive use of mobile devices while recognising the continued relevance of digital media as educational aids in daily pedagogical activities.
