Levelled by municipal workers' unionMinister for Home Affairs and Syvicol President decline to respond to criticism

Claude Reuter, President of the General Federation of Municipal Workers (FGFC), sharply criticised state and municipal administrations for misallocation of resources and excessive outsourcing, calling for more oversight and suggesting municipal mergers to streamline operations, in a recent interview with RTL Radio.

During an interview with our colleagues from RTL Radio on Wednesday, Claude Reuter, President of the General Federation of Municipal Workers (FGFC), did not hold back in his criticism of both the state and municipal administrations. However, neither Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden nor President of the Association of Luxembourg Cities and Municipalities (Syvicol) Emile Eicher were willing to provide a response to these accusations.

The Ministry of Home Affairs declined to comment on Wednesday morning’s interview, citing ongoing dialogue between Minister Gloden and Claude Reuter.

Reuter’s critique focused on the alleged misallocation of qualified staff by municipalities, who he claimed often opted to outsource projects, particularly in technical areas, rather than handling them internally. He highlighted instances of poorly conceived projects and the construction of unnecessary “pompous buildings,” advocating for enhanced oversight. Reuter suggested that municipal mergers could streamline infrastructure needs, eliminating redundancy.

Additionally, Reuter criticised what he perceived as the state’s tendency to shift excessive responsibility onto municipalities in areas such as municipal transport and the management of drop-in centres (maisons-relais).
