The fire affected an old house. One of the residents, a woman of around 80 years of age, suffered critical injuries and was carried out of the building by firefighters before being transported to a hospital. Initial information suggested that two firefighters were also injured - however more recent information from mayor Georges Mischo confirms that one firefighter and one additional person suffered injuries. It is unclear who the third person was at this point.
Residents from the neighbouring building were evacuated, and it has been stated that around a dozen people will need to be relocated as the material damage and spread of the fire were extensive. This includes residents of the affected house, as well as those in neighbouring buildings. They will initially be provided with hotels to stay in.
The area was cordoned off during the firefighting operation. Images on social media depicted high flames and heavy smoke emitting from the affected building.
The cause of the fire remains to be determined.
Esch fire fighters were supported by teams from Rumelange, Kayl, Mondercange, Differdange and the capital. Two ambulances and first response teams also assisted at the scene.
