Maintenance work in Luxembourg’s motorway tunnels is ongoing, with the National Roads Authority currently focusing on the Grouft Tunnel.

The “Pénétrante Sud” tunnel was the first to undergo maintenance in 2025, with work carried out during the night of 18–19 March. During these operations, up to 300,000 individual technical elements per tunnel are inspected and replaced if necessary.

A total of 23 tunnels across Luxembourg are part of the maintenance programme. These checks occur twice a year – once in spring and again in autumn – to ensure all technical components remain in optimal condition.

Once inspections are complete, cleaning crews take over, requiring the affected tunnel to close for two additional nights. According to Ralph Di Marco, spokesperson for the National Roads Authority, accumulated dust and debris can impair visibility and damage technical installations, making regular cleaning essential.

The final tunnels scheduled for maintenance are Howald and Cents, with work set for the night of 29–30 May.
