The unemployment rate started the year with a rise. According to figures from the National Employment Agency (ADEM), 15,801 people were looking for work at the end of January 2023.

“The number of jobseekers is up for all vacancy durations except for those with a registration period of more than twelve months”, reveals a respective ADEM statement.

The number of new jobseeker registrations is also on the rise: 2,893 residents registered with ADEM last month, a year-over-year increase of 22.6%. By the end of the month, the ADEM counted a total of 10,988 vacancies.

Since there has been an increase of people above the age of 45 registering with the Agency, Minister of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy Georges Engel has announced that the government wants to implement a new strategy to strengthen people’s skills. A study concerning this issue is to be presented at some later point this week.
