Gathered on St Peter’s Square, the head of state and his wife, along with the Prime Minister, attended the funeral of Pope Francis.
The visit was a natural gesture for Luxembourg, which had welcomed Pope Francis in September during one of his final trips abroad. Reflecting on the Pope’s passing on Monday 21 April, the Grand Duke described Francis as a deeply compassionate figure who showed constant concern for the suffering of others, remained committed to supporting the vulnerable, particularly refugees, and always paid attention to the hopes of younger generations.
Frieden ensured the government was represented despite having just returned from a four-day trip to Japan.
