Despite freezing temperatures on Saturday afternoon, the City’s Christmas market by the “Gëlle Fra” was quite busy, which pleased stall owners greatly. First impressions are overall positive.

The President of the National Federation of Fair Traders (FNCF), Charel Hary, has a positive outlook on the markets so far. He claims that stalls are doing as well as they were last year around this time, yielding great numbers. 2019 and 2022 were good years for stall traders and he hopes 2023 will perform equally as well.

On Saturday, at least, the weather did not disappoint - with clear and sunny skies all throughout the day. The owners of the approximatively 100 stalls hope the weather will keep cooperating. But, in any case, it seems clear that people are just keen to leave their houses, says Steve, who runs a food stall at the market. “The first week was great for us. The mood was great, although it did rain a little in the beginning. I think people really wanted to go out after three weeks of sitting at home due to the rain. We are extremely satisfied,” he sums up.

His colleagues agree. “The sun is shining and people are here. There is nothing to complain about,” according to Vincent who sells sweets at the market. Kevin, who operates a carrousel, also concludes that, “The first week has not been bad at all. Especially, when the weather cooperates, then everything is great.”

At the Place Guillaume II, from next Saturday onwards, a small new attraction will be opening its doors as part of this year’s edition of the “Winterlights": the “Winter Kids Market” will be hosting activities for young and children from Wednesdays until Sundays!
