Housing is not the only expense that has increased in Luxembourg. According to "Luxembourg in Figures" published by Statec, households have also spent more to buy tobacco, alcohol and even drugs.
In 2017, residents spent €1.541 billion on these products. In 2018, this amount increased by €116 million to €1.657 billion.
While the sum has increased, the share of the household budget allocated to some of these purchases has decreased.
In 1999, alcoholic beverages and tobacco accounted for up to 1.99% of expenditure. This share fell to 1.42% in 2010, 1.36% in 2016 and 1.34% in 2017.
What did not decline was the price: these rose by 1.6% in 2017 and 2018, and by 2.2% in 2019.
