European Central BankLuxembourger Yves Mersch nominated as deputy chairman of ECB supervisory board

Yves Mersch was already a governing council member of the European Central Bank's executive board in Frankfurt.

Mersch is expected to succeed Sabine Lautenschläger as the deputy chairman of the bank's supervisory board.

Lautenschläger's mandate came to an end in February. On Tuesday evening, the governing council informed the European Parliament that they had named Mersch as the successor to Lautenschläger.

The ECB's bank watchdog has existed since 2014. In the next step, Mersch will have to meet with the European Parliament's economic commission in order to be approved.

If the parliament approves him, the heads of state and governments of the European Union will also have to approve Mersch in a next step.
