The President of Cape Verde, José Maria Neves, commenced a state visit to the Grand Duchy earlier this week to mark 30 years of relations between the two countries.

In a press conference during the presidential couple’s visit to Esch-Belval, Neves explained that the relationship between Cape Verde and Luxembourg had contributed to the island state’s development.

Luxembourgish support in fields such as education, renewable energy and tourism was essential for the country’s future. Speaking alongside Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, the Cape Verdean President termed it a “partnership”.

At present, Martine Schommer, Luxembourg’s ambassador to Portugal, carries out the same function for Cape Verde. However, Xavier Bettel assured the press that Luxembourg will strengthen its diplomatic presence in Praia. Grand Duke Henri previously announced plans to appoint a permanent ambassador to Cape Verde in the next diplomatic shuffle. Bettel added that Cape Verde represented an example in terms of democracy and values.

Freedom, democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights and protection of human dignity: these values are shared by the two countries, emphasised Neves on Wednesday. On an international level, the two countries defend the same values: multilateralism, respect for international law and the integrity of countries.

Neves went on to condemn the invasion of Ukraine and said the conflict must be resolved through negotiation between the parties, but above all with respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
