Police interventions linked to domestic violence rose by 10% in 2025, while the number of perpetrators removed from their homes increased by 16%, according to figures presented by Equality Minister Yuriko Backes on Friday.
The latest data indicate that domestic violence remains a persistent problem in Luxembourg, with police called to an average of three incidents every day last year.
Laurent Seck of the Luxembourg Public Prosecutor's Office said the rise could partly reflect greater public awareness and an increased willingness among victims to contact the authorities.
However, professionals working in the field stressed that more attention must be paid to preventing perpetrators from reoffending.
Kristin Schmit of the Criminal Investigation Department (SPJ) called for greater efforts to address perpetrators' behaviour directly. Laurence Bouquet of the Luxembourg Red Cross added that repeat offenders were among those least likely to receive appropriate follow-up.
Against this backdrop, Backes referred to an ongoing study examining repeat offenders, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Olga Strasser of the women's support organisation Femmes en détresse also highlighted the difficulties victims face when trying to leave an abusive relationship. A shortage of suitable housing, she said, often makes it particularly difficult for them to escape their situation and rebuild their lives.
