According to a new analysis from the International Coffee Organisation (ICO), Luxembourg has the world’s highest per-capita coffee consumption.

The report estimates that the average resident of Luxembourg consumes 118,227 cups of coffee over the course of their life – an average of 5.31 cups per day. This places Luxembourgers significantly ahead of second-ranked Finland, where residents drink 3.77 cups daily, and third-ranked Sweden, with 2.59 cups. Notably, all ten top-ranking countries in per-capita consumption are located in Europe.

In terms of price, however, Luxembourg ranks ninth, with an average cup costing €3.09. Denmark tops this list at €4.64, followed by Switzerland (€4.29) and the United States (€4.03).

Measured by weight, Luxembourg again leads, with annual per-capita consumption of 20.53kg – well ahead of Finland’s 14.48kg.

These results, however, come with an important caveat. While the statistics reflect high consumption relative to Luxembourg’s resident population, they do not account for the substantial number of cross-border workers and visitors from neighbouring regions who purchase coffee in Luxembourg, attracted by comparatively lower prices. Their consumption is included in the national total, thereby inflating the per-capita figures.

The study also highlights a perhaps surprising trend: some countries renowned for coffee production actually have very low domestic consumption. India, Uganda, and Peru occupy the bottom three places in the ranking, with annual per-capita consumption ranging from just 0.06 to 0.44kg.
