A series of drink-driving incidents across Luxembourg on Friday evening led to revoked licences, vehicle seizures, and a major traffic accident, according to police reports.

The Luxembourg police responded to several cases of drink-driving on Friday evening.

At around 6.40pm, officers in Bertrange were alerted to a visibly intoxicated individual attempting to drive away from a petrol station. Upon arrival, police requested a breathalyser test from the driver, who initially resisted but eventually complied. The test returned a positive result, leading to the immediate revocation of the driver’s licence and the issuance of a temporary driving ban.

Later that evening, police received reports of a driver asleep behind the wheel in Dudelange. Officers located the vehicle with its engine running and hazard lights activated. After struggling to wake the driver, a breathalyser test confirmed alcohol impairment. The driver’s licence was revoked, and further investigation revealed a prior drink-driving offence. As a result, the vehicle was seized on the orders of the public prosecutor’s office, and the driver was fined.

Shortly before 5pm in Schifflange, a police patrol had to evade a wrong-way driver. The motorist was pulled over and subjected to a breathalyser test, which returned a positive result. The driver was subsequently fined for drink-driving.

A drink-driving incident in Dippach led to a multi-vehicle collision at around 6.30pm. The driver, travelling on the N5, lost control of their vehicle, crashing into a stone cross, traffic signs, and a tree before coming to a stop in a ditch. A second vehicle struck a tyre dislodged from the first car, causing it to veer into the opposite lane and collide with a third vehicle. All three vehicles sustained significant damage and required towing. The driver responsible for the initial crash was taken to a hospital for a medical check-up before undergoing a breathalyser test, which confirmed alcohol impairment. The motorist was fined.

Routine alcohol checks

In addition to these incidents, the police conducted routine alcohol checks on Friday night on the orders of the public prosecutor’s office. In Fentange and Luxembourg City, officers tested 193 drivers, with 11 returning positive results. Three drivers had their licences revoked on the spot.
