24-hour 'Speedmarathon'Luxembourg police let public vote on speed check locations via Instagram

In a first for Luxembourg road safety efforts, police are inviting motorists to help choose where speed checks will be conducted during a 24-hour "Speedmarathon" enforcement campaign next week.

The Luxembourg Police will conduct 24-hour speed checks on 9 April as part of the “Speedmarathon” initiative. In an innovative approach to road safety, authorities are inviting public participation in selecting enforcement locations through a social media vote.

Starting Friday, 4 April, motorists can vote for their preferred speed check locations via the police Instagram account (@policelux). Voters will choose between two potential sites in each of Luxembourg’s four police regions: North, South-West, Centre-East, and Capital.

This initiative aims to raise awareness about speeding dangers while engaging the community in road safety efforts, police stated. The selected locations will be incorporated into enforcement plans based on patrol availability during the 24-hour operation.

The campaign will receive extensive social media coverage, with real-time updates, prevention messages, and photo reports shared primarily through the @policelux Instagram account using the hashtag #speedmarathon.

This local effort forms part of the wider European “Speed” campaign (7–13 April 2025), coordinated by Roadpol – the European Traffic Police Network. The initiative targets excessive speed, which remains the primary cause of fatal road accidents across Europe and a significant factor in crash severity.
