Seeing as more and more people are giving priority to their personal lives and relegating their careers to second place, the term “work-life balance” has been renamed “life-work balance” by Remote, the international human resources services platform responsible for compiling the rankings.

The life-work balance index considers a range of crucial factors, including healthcare, minimum wage, maternity leave, statutory holidays, sick pay, overall happiness levels, average working hours, and inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Luxembourg emerges as the standout performer in the European ranking. Across most of the criteria analysed, the Grand Duchy performs well above average. Of particular note are the nation’s 26 days of statutory leave, complemented by 11 public holidays, totalling 37 days of annual time off. Luxembourg also offers sick pay equivalent to 100% of one’s salary, a rarity compared to other European nations. Expecting parents benefit from generous maternity leave, entitling the employee to full salary coverage for a period of 20 weeks.

In addition, Luxembourg takes the lead in terms of minimum wage, standing at $14.26 per hour. The country secures a commendable overall satisfaction score, with a happiness rating of 7.4 out of 10, securing a top-three position among the 30 countries considered in the index. The average workweek in Luxembourg stands at 27.4 hours, putting the country in the top half of the ranking. The nation also distinguishes itself in LGBTQIA+ community inclusion, receiving a score of 75 out of 100.

Luxembourg’s overall score of 85.26 points puts it at the top of the ranking, outperforming Spain (78.63 points) and France (77.19 points). At the other end of the spectrum, Romania lags behind with a score of 55.28 points.
