Animal welfareLuxembourg maintains live shellfish trade

RTL Today
Lobsters, oysters, and mussels remain exempt from the provisions of the current Animal Protection Bill in Luxembourg, allowing them to be sold live within the country.

Minister of Agriculture Martine Hansen clarified the stance, stating, “There are currently no immediate plans to amend the Animal Protection Bill in this regard.” This response came following a parliamentary question from the Pirate Party.

MP Marc Goergen raised concerns over the treatment of lobsters, highlighting the practice of immersing them alive into boiling water during preparation despite their sensitivity to pain.

The Minister of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV) acknowledged, however, that there are plans for revisions at the European level, hinting at forthcoming amendments that would necessitate corresponding adjustments at the national level.
