Economy and Energy Minister Lex Delles has said Luxembourg's fuel supply remains secure despite extremely low water levels on the Rhine, although some filling stations may temporarily run out of certain products.
Delles made the comments on Tuesday in response to a parliamentary question from MP Marc Georgen of the Pirate Party (Piratepartei).
According to the minister, drought has caused water levels on the Rhine to fall to extremely low levels, severely restricting shipping on both the Rhine and the Moselle.
He said importers that previously received some of their petroleum products via the Moselle had therefore been forced to adjust their supply chains to continue serving customers in Luxembourg.
Delles added that one operator had been unable to supply as many as ten filling stations temporarily last week. The operator’s supply situation had improved again since the beginning of this week, he said.
While the overall situation remained strained, Delles stressed that the country's fuel supply was currently assured. Individual filling stations could nevertheless be temporarily unable to offer certain products, he stated. Delles concluded that the ministry was monitoring the situation and was prepared to release fuel reserves onto the market if widespread supply problems arose.
