Recently published figures suggest that the health crisis may have made Luxembourg a greener country.
In its latest publication, Eurostat noted a sharp drop in demand for electricity this year. The cause? Coronavirus.
In March and April, electricity consumption was about 14% lower than in the same period in 2017. It was even 16% lower than the average over the previous four years.
Interestingly, consumption did not return to its usual level after the lockdown. Both in May and June energy consumption remained 7% below average.
While Eurostat suggests that some countries have seen a lasting fall in consumption thanks to (or because of) a less touristy summer, the case of Luxembourg is simpler: teleworking. During the confinement, employees were not only able to extend their nights but also consumed very little at the office. All this at a time when the demand for electricity at home has not increased.
