The Grand Theatre in Luxembourg City has been a cultural landmark since 1964. Located in Limpertsberg opposite the Champ du Glacis, it remains one of the capital’s key performance venues. The building was fully renovated in 2002 and reopened to the public in September 2003. Alongside its main auditorium, which seats over 900 people, the site also includes a studio space for 100–400 spectators.
Alongside these performance spaces, the building also houses two bars on the first floor. At the moment, the two bar areas appear empty and unused, but by 1 March 2026 at the latest, they are expected to reopen. What is missing is someone with a fresh vision who is ready to transform the space with their own ideas.
Tom Leik, the theatre’s director, explained that the incoming operator will have considerable freedom to shape the atmosphere. He noted that while some of the existing furniture can remain, anyone taking over is welcome to redesign the bar to suit their concept. The larger space on the opposite side of the foyer, he added, could even be divided into smaller seating areas or themed sections.
He also emphasised that the theatre is a place where people come together to share an experience, and the bar should extend that sense of conviviality before and after performances. Leik stressed that quick service is essential, especially during the 20-minute interval, and that the setting should feel welcoming and creative.
The Grand Theatre programmes between 80 and 100 performances each year, with around 50 additional productions hosted in the venue. Anyone hoping to run the bars must meet one essential requirement: the space must open at least one hour before each performance and remain open for at least one hour afterwards. Sufficient staffing and operational know-how are also key.
Leik is hoping for an original concept that suits a cultural venue built around imagination and innovation.
The bars could also open at lunchtime, offering light meals for theatre staff or anyone working in the area. Pricing, he emphasised, should remain reasonable.
Applications must be submitted by 5 January. Further information can be found on the City of Luxembourg’s website at vdl.lu.
