Med Chani, who holds both Algerian and Luxembourgish nationality, is a free man once more. The financial adviser was sentenced to a long prison sentence in Algeria in 2009 after he was detained on charges of corruption and money laundering.
Chani steadfastly denied all charges against him, which had arisen from a case surrounding the construction of a motorway. In 2015, he led a hunger strike to denounce the conditions in which he was held. There were also allegations of torture during his imprisonment
His family and friends did everything within their power to raise awareness for Chani's situation in Luxembourg. In June 2015, a support committee organised a demonstration outside the Chamber of Deputies.
Now, after ten years, the Algerian-Luxembourger is free and able to return to his home in the Grand Duchy.
