Sam Steen was joined by the Luxembourgish band members on Thursday as they are making their way from Lviv, where they performed Wednesday night, to Kyiv. Their live show in the Ukrainian capital will be streamed on Youtube and give viewers the possibility to contribute to funds going to, among others, homeless shelters, dog shelters, and supplies for civilians in Bakhmut.
The fight for Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine, is the scene of the longest-running battle since beginning of the war and has been at the centre of months of heavy fighting in Russia’s nearly year-long offensive in Ukraine, with both sides suffering heavy losses.
The pair also supports a children’s table tennis club in Kyiv where they are doing everything they can to provide an outlet, safe space and distraction for kids living in this terrifying situation.
Formed in 2005 and releasing close to an album a year since then, Rome are used to playing all over Europe and actually played in Kyiv a few days before the invasion nearly one year ago on February 18th.
Now, marking a year since those last shows and a year since the beginning of the war, Rome are returning to play a number of shows and to help to raise spirits and much needed funds for those most in need.
From Day 1 of the Russian invasion, they knew they could not sit on their hands. Borys already completed nine “missions” where he brought much needed supplies. He even brought refugees out of the war stricken country.
Asked what their situation is like in Ukraine, the members said it is “more normal” than people think but they are also currently 100 miles from what Jerome described as “the slaughterhouse”.
Most of the people who will attend their shows are people who have had to leave their homes.
Borys hopes to continue his missions after this tour and is helped and supported in his work by his “Army of Angels” a group of over a hundred people who regularly donate money and supplies.
