According to newspaper Tageblatt, flight LG5554 was forced to land in Hamburg on Monday while flying from the Norwegian capital to Luxembourg City. Photos that have since been published on social media networks show the damage that one of the cockpit windows suffered from a bird strike.
Passengers on the flight were told to fasten their seatbelts because of expected turbulence, which did not occur in the end. The flight crew finally announced that a landing was necessary in Hamburg “due to a technical problem”.
The plane was able to land in Germany without any problems and passengers were brought to the airport. Some of them were able to depart again a few hours later, others had to spend the night in Hamburg.
Luxair later confirmed to RTL that the cockpit window was hit by a bird in mid-air, an incident that the airline’s staff are trained to handle. Airline officials further said that the safety of passengers was not compromised at any moment and that it was only a matter of cracks in the first layer of the cockpit windows.
The affected aircraft, a De Havilland DHC-8 with two turboprop engines, can accommodate up to 76 passengers.
