Luxair is operating between 16 and 18 aircraft over the Christmas holiday period to meet high demand for sunny getaways, with the Canary Islands remaining the top destination.
Tens of thousands of passengers are using the break to escape winter weather. Early on Saturday morning alone, approximately 15 flights – mostly operated by Luxair – departed from Findel Airport between 6 and 7am.
Thomas Fischer of Luxair told our colleagues from RTL Télé the airline expects a 3% increase in passenger numbers compared to last year’s holiday season. “Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the evergreens,” Fischer said, confirming the enduring popularity of the Canaries. He also noted strong demand for destinations like Djerba, Malaga, Palma, Porto, Egypt, Funchal, and Dubai.
“Egypt has recovered very well,” Fischer added, highlighting that offers are popular not only with passengers from Luxembourg but also from neighbouring regions in France, Belgium, and Germany.
Behind the scenes, preparations for these flights begin well before takeoff. For the 6.40am departure to Dubai, pilot Laurent Donteri and his crew convened an hour and fifteen minutes prior for a pre-flight briefing. A pilot with Luxair for 25 years, Donteri told RTL, “Flying has always been a passion for me – the whole technology and how you can even keep a plane in the air.”
