Although the Esch-sur-Alzette youth centre is not accessible to wheelchair users, Leandro has been regularly coming to the local meeting place for the past six years. Staff members usually help the 20-year-old inside the building and up several stairs so that he can practice playing the piano.
While the youth centre has already filed an application for a lift, it might still take until 2024 before an installation is completed.
In the meantime, the organisation ‘Zesumme fir Inclusioun’ (‘Together for inclusion’), short ZEFI, has awarded a prize to the staff of the youth centre for their relentless efforts of giving everyone a chance to join their community.
ZEFI has existed for 30 years and has regularly awarded prizes to organisations that are invested in the integration of people with disabilities.
