Saving waterLeft Party proposes introduction of tiered water price scale

RTL Today
The Left Party (déi Lénk) aims to promote its policy plan for a tiered water price scale with the slogan "reward saving, punish wastefulness."

Any usage beyond basic needs should gradually increase in price under the model proposed by the Left, which would ensure free daily usage of 50 litres per person. The standard water price would apply from 50 to 100 litres, but consumption above 100 litres would be charged double “to punish water wasting,” according to Marc Baum.

Households in Luxembourg City consume approximately 180 litres of water per person, according to the latest figures from 2022.

Baum stated that the debate began “when the CSV government turned water into a commodity that was to be financed in a cost-covering way.” However, the current government, in the eyes of the Left Party, is also not doing enough in this regard. According to the opposition party, this would be a good measure to make saving more appealing again, “something which is needed to pursue the ecological transition.” In a second phase, the Left Party could envision a mechanism similar to the graduated water price scale for gas and electricity.
