On Friday, the Ministry of State revealed the number of signatures collected in the country’s municipalities. In total, 436 people signed the initiative to force a referendum on chapters IV and Vbis. However, one signature was invalid, which brings the total down to 435. In comparison, 966 signatures were collected for a referendum on Chapter III.
25,000 signatures would have been required to trigger a referendum on the new constitution. Since this threshold was not crossed, the two chapters in question will be ratified by a second constitutional vote in the Chamber of Deputies rather than by referendum.
The result of the collection in Luxembourg’s municipalities may be challenged by any voter before the Administrative Court within five days of the date of publication of the results in the Official Journal of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Other chapters of the new constitution will also not be subject to referendum votes. An initiative seeking a referendum on the justice chapter garnered 7,400 signatures, while a second campaign focused on other chapters obtained only 1,652 signatures.
