CommerceIt is important to strike a balance between health and economy: Tom Wirion

Frank Goetz
Our colleagues from RTL recently sat down for an interview with the chief executive from Chamber of Trades.

A well-struck balance

Wirion welcomes the partial reopening of commerce, which includes both hairdressers and cosmeticians alike. Following the almost three-month-long closure, most businesses are currently fighting for their existence, even though they are well-prepared to face the challenges of reopening safely. Wirion thus argued that a balance between health and economy needs to be struck, which he believes the administration is failing to do.

A new perspective

Wirion further talked about the governmental vaccination campaign, which he considers to be lacking a proactive spirit. After all, this remains the only path allowing a return to normal, the chief executive explained: “The vaccine will help give us perspective once again, both in our private and professional lives.”

Wirion also welcomed the decision to let the European Union handle all vaccine orders as a way of avoiding unnecessary competition between member states. Nevertheless, he declared the current state of affairs as “less than optimal”, considering the lack of supply and distribution of units.

Overall, the chief executive argued for a stronger, more positive message from the administration to businesses. Progress has been made on the level of research, but the message has not been voiced clearly enough.
