"Housing prices are a disaster"Interview with Hesper Mayor Marc Lies

RTL Today
The mayor of Hesperange was a guest on RTL Radio on Wednesday morning.

According to CSV MP Marc Lies, the current housing prices are a disaster and it should not surprise anyone that nobody is able to afford anything anymore – which is why something needs to be done.

Lies made these statements during an interview on RTL Radio on Wednesday morning.

The politician from the Christian Social People's Party criticised that the government tried to hastily put together solutions over the past months instead of adopting a more collected approach. He cited the new rent law, which still left a lot of questions unanswered, as an example.

While Lies admitted that there were some good ideas, e.g. in the case of rent contracts for flat-sharing communities, there were also problems, such as commercial flat-sharing and subletting.

The Hesperange mayor also stressed that in regard to the new housing pact, it was of major importance to fight speculation on land prices. He cited property tax as one possible starting point, however, the government has yet to give a statement on this topic.

Lies stated that he finds it extremely regrettable that municipalities were still not receiving additional subsidies to build social housing. According to the CSV MP, the new housing pact would on the contrary even lead to municipalities receiving de facto less funds than right now.
