On Thursday, minister Léon Gloden (CSV) announced his decision to cancel the recruitment of a “communal pact coordinator” for Hesperange municipal council.
Members of the opposition on the council had sent a letter to the Ministry of the Interior in order to contest the council’s decision last Friday, claiming that the recruited candidate did not fulfil the role’s conditions. They also said the candidate had direct familial ties to Mayor Marc Lies (CSV), thus representing a potential conflict of interest.
In a statement published on Thursday, Gloden confirmed an investigation had taken place into the matter, concluding that the candidate had not met the job requirements for the A2 position as they did not possess the required diplomas. For this reason, the Minister said he would annul the council’s decision to offer the job to this candidate.
However, he said the accusation of a conflict of interest did not apply in this case, as the mayor is said to have left the room when the issue of recruitment was brought up in a meeting and therefore did not participate in subsequent discussions or a vote.
