
The MPs also addressed the issue of domestic violence and its surge in relation to coronavirus. They agreed that the current statistics on domestic violence might not reflect the true extent of the problem. Some MPs suggested that the government could offer hotel rooms to victims of domestic abuse.
Minister of Justice Sam Tanson welcomed the idea. She nevertheless expressed concern that many cases of abuse do not get reported to the authorities.
MPs also discussed the option to release prisoners because of the spreading of the virus. Tanson emphasised that there was no risk for Schrassig prison to become overcrowded - and no inmate has tested positive for coronavirus yet. It therefore remains unlikely that inmates will be prematurely freed.
