National postal serviceIncrease in package deliveries, decrease in posted letters

The pandemic already had its fair share of implications on everyday life. For the past six months, the national postal service has begun experiencing notable changes as well, such as a 25% decline in posted letters.

Meanwhile, the frequency of online sales and package deliveries has significantly increased, causing delays depending on the area. These are partly due to the grounding of several hundred flights, which usually connect the Grand Duchy to the wider market.

On average, around 25,000 packages are delivered in Luxembourg on a daily basis. A frequency that is much lower compared to the confinement period (-56%). Nevertheless, the rate remains much higher than that of 2019.

Hjoerdis Stahl, deputy director of Post, notes that the supply chain has become even more complex since the beginning of the outbreak, mostly due to the international air traffic having been reduced.

The upcoming US presidential elections create another critical area with little room for mistakes. The post's regulatory department is tasked with finding alternative ways to deliver letters to the US to avoid any possible delays related to the coronavirus.
