Party reshuffleHow will the LSAP's MP and MEP representations change?

If incoming European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen's new commission is approved by the European Parliament, there will be some changes within LSAP's representation in the Chamber of Deputies.

Provided the European Parliament votes for the new European Commission, current LSAP MEP Nicolas Schmit will set down his MEP mandate to take up the roll of European Commission for work. This means one of Luxembourg's six MEP seats in Strasbourg will open up, with LSAP MP Marc Angel taking over for Schmit.
Angel explained that once the vote takes place on 27 November, he will hand in his resignation to the Chamber of Deputies. The Chamber will then submit a 'validation of credentials' to the European Parliament on behalf of Angel, letting the European institution know that Angel received the second-highest LSAP share of the vote and will replace Schmit once he joins the European Commission. Then, Francine Closener will submit her application for the Chamber to validate her credentials in order for her to replace Angel as an LSAP MP in Luxembourg's Parliament.

Another resignation expected to occur within the party at some point is that of Etienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy, amongst other mandates. Recently, Schneider announced he would not complete his mandate due to his personal philosophy of not being a government minister for longer than ten years. Schneider's announcement has led to speculation on his succession, with Dan Kersch and Franz Fayot's names thrown into the ring.

Minister of Labour and Sport Dan Kersch spoke to RTL Radio last week, saying he has had to answer the question several times. His stance was firm, namely that the only person who can decide when Schneider ends his mandate is Schneider himself. Kersch explained that his colleague 'only elaborated that he would step down after ten years at most'. There is nothing more to the topic at the current time, Kersch added, describing speculation about him succeeding Schneider as 'secondary'.

Behind the scenes, murmurs suggest Fayot has expressed an interest in taking over the role. Officially, Fayot will not confirm the rumours and repeats the party line that discussions must not take place until Schneider officially makes his decision. Regardless, a politician in the central constituency will move into the Chamber of Deputies, likely Cécile Hemmen.

More is known about LSAP MP Alex Bodry, who is handing the mantle of party chief in parliament to Georges Engel on 1 January. This will merely require a form to allow him to join the government council. Simone Asselborn-Bintz will replace him as MP.
