One year after taking the oath before the Chamber of Deputies, Grand Duke Guillaume has made young people, volunteers and Luxembourg's economy the focus of his reign, while representing the country from Brussels to the United Nations.

On 3 October 2025, Grand Duke Guillaume was officially sworn in before the Chamber of Deputies, formally assuming his role as Luxembourg’s head of state.

In his accession speech, he pledged to remain politically neutral, to safeguard democratic institutions, and to promote social solidarity across the country.

The following day, he embarked on a ceremonial tour of several towns, Grevenmacher, Troisvierges, Steinfort, and Dudelange, to forge direct connections with people throughout Luxembourg.

Similar meet-and-greet events, known as Joyeuses Entrées, were held in Esch, Troisvierges, and Ehnen, allowing the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess to engage with residents from all generations.

According to the Grand Ducal Court, these initiatives are set to continue in 2027, with Joyeuses Entrées planned for Mersch on 11 June and Beckerich on 9 July.

Focus on youth and social engagement

From the outset, Grand Duke Guillaume emphasised the importance of engaging with young people. In his first year, he welcomed members of the Youth Parliament to the palace to discuss social cohesion and democracy, received Ukrainian youth from Bucha, and, in May 2026, was named honorary president of the World Scout Foundation.

The Grand Ducal Court has also decided to give a specific focus to the well-known garden parties held at Berg Castle. This year, young people had the opportunity to spend an evening in the castle gardens alongside traditional representatives from various sectors of Luxembourgish society, who are invited annually.

Supporting volunteerism was another key theme for the Grand Duke and Grand Duchess. In addition to honouring nursing staff and first responders, the couple actively participated in charity events such as Relais pour la Vie and Télévie.

They also support aid organisations like the Volkskitchen and Stëmm vun der Strooss, attending the Christmas celebrations organised by the latter.

Supporting businesses and representing Luxembourg abroad

Continuing his previous work as Hereditary Grand Duke, Grand Duke Guillaume spent much of his first year visiting businesses across Luxembourg, highlighting the importance of the domestic economy.

He also promoted Luxembourg as a business hub abroad, most notably when he presented the "Luxembourg American Business Award" in New York in April.

On the international stage, Grand Duke Guillaume and Grand Duchess Stéphanie represented Luxembourg in neighbouring countries including Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Spain.

More recently, the Grand Duke addressed the United Nations General Assembly, and at the end of September, the couple hosted Finland’s President Stubb for the first official state visit of their reign.
