Esch-sur-Alzette'House of Solidarity' marks 50th anniversary since welcoming first people with mental disabilities

RTL Today
50 years ago, the House of Solidarity in Esch-sur-Alzette opened its doors to allow people with mental disabilities to live and work together.

The Association of Parents of Children with Mental Disabilities (APEMH) was founded in 1967. Four years later, the municipality of Esch-sur-Alzette donated a 76-are property to the Association. On 15 December 1972, the first residents with disabilities moved into the ‘House of Solidarity’, a building that still houses 100 people to this day.

50 years later, the APEMH operates several locations across the Grand Duchy, giving people with disabilities not only a chance to live together, but also to work together.

With support from the Ministry of Labour, Employment and the Social and Solidarity Economy and the Ministry for Family Affairs and Integration, the Association hopes to continue its mission for another 50 years.
