Out of the 16,700 beneficiaries of long-term care insurance in Luxembourg, around 300 participated in the survey.

Approximately 4,900 people - about one-third - reside in nursing homes and elderly care facilities, with an average age of 85 years. In contrast, those who still live at home have an average age of 65 years.

The primary reason for moving to a care home or CIPA (Centres for Integrated Services for the Elderly) was medical necessity. However, half of the respondents also mentioned that they did not want to be a burden on their families or that it was their children’s wish for them to move.

77% of the elderly respondents felt that their decision to move out of their homes was made with the right insight. Additionally, 86% of the respondents were satisfied with the structure and services of their care facilities, though 9% reported feeling bad about the transition.

Negative aspects mentioned by respondents included the emotional impact of leaving home, feelings of sadness, loneliness, and isolation.

Some also expressed a desire to continue cooking and shopping for themselves and reported difficulties in adapting to the organisation and schedules of the care facilities.
