Elis has been working at the Madame Witzeg restaurant, next to the Waassertrap retirement home in Belvaux, for nearly a year. The young woman helps with numerous tasks, from serving customers to working in the kitchen. She says the work makes her feel comfortable and needed.

The inclusive restaurant now employs ten people with Down’s Syndrome, supervised by chefs and educators.

“It’s all about inclusion”

For the charity Trisomie 21, which runs the restaurant, the project is about much more than simply providing a place of work. It represents an important step in the right direction when it comes to active inclusion.

“It’s all about helping people with Down’s Syndrome to integrate into society, give them perspective, and show off everything they’re capable of“, explains a spokesperson for the charity.

For the past 25 years, the charity has worked hard to improve quality of life for people affected by Down’s, taking small, yet important steps. People with Down’s are often very empathetic and emotional, but there is a lack of housing or assisted living infrastructure in the Grand Duchy.
