Earlier this week, RTL sources indicated that the government might plan on extending the current fuel discount by one month. The Greens now shared their intentions of carrying the motion in the government council on Friday. Party officials addressed the issue during their annual retrospective on the parliamentary year, which took place on Thursday afternoon.
Despite approving of the extension, the Greens also reiterated their position that the measure is “useless” given that everybody can benefit from it. They thus described their support as a “final compromise”.
MP Josée Lorsché, fraction leader of the Greens, elaborated that the party is in favour of relief packages, but that the universal fuel discount allows high-income people to benefit more than those with lower incomes. Furthermore, the measure fails to have a real impact on the price increase, which is why the Greens would prefer a tax relief in the area of soft mobility.
The fuel discount, initially scheduled to end in July, was a result of the latest tripartite talks. The decision to now extend it until the end of August was allegedly taken in an effort to align with the policies of neighbouring Germany.
